Soccer star tapping the MTV generation
Dec. 12, 1996
Cobi Jones has played a significant role in further popularizing the sport of soccer. He receives more fan mail than any other U.S. National Team player and currently plays soccer for the Los Angeles Galaxy.
Off the field, Jones keeps busy by pursuing his burgeoning acting and broadcasting career. He currently hosts his own television show on MTV called "Mega Dose," which he says features contemporary health issues -- like rock concert injuries and tattoos -- in its 30-minute format. After two shows were taped last year, the latest edition will premiere in January.
Cobi, who says he was hired by MTV after submitting an audition tape that included an interview with reggae singer Ziggy Marley, says the response to "Mega Dose" has been very positive.
Cobi has also made an appearance on "Beverly Hills 90210." He told me that Andrew Shue, the "Melrose Place" actor and also his Galaxy teammate, played matchmaker recently by fixing up ABC TV star Kimberly Williams with Galaxy player Jorge Salvedo.
Does Cobi need Shue's matchmaking skills? Doesn't look like it. Cobi says he's attached, but wants to keep his girlfriend's name private.
