Soap Star puts Shue on the other foot
Sept. 24, 1996

Prime time soap star gets kick playing soccer

First there were Bo and Deion having two jobs -- playing baseball and football. Now there is an actor playing soccer and starring in a hit TV show.

Andrew Shue, star of "Melrose Place" also played midfielder for Major League Soccer's Los Angeles Galaxy this season. Other professional athletes have launched TV careers (Fred Dryer, Alex Karras, Merlin Olsen). But Shue may be the only one to remain on the playing field while starring in a weekly show.

His juggling effort began in early July when the Monday night soap began filming its fifth season. The soccer season, which began in April, ended on Sept. 22.

Shue's second career is not new at all. He's been playing soccer since he was a little tike -- four years at Dartmouth University and the 1990-91 season in Africa with the Bulawayo Super Highlanders in Zimbabwe.

Speedy Seinfeld

Comedian Jerry Seinfeld has gotten the racing bug.

He attended the infamous Skip Barber Racing School, where a lot of celebrities have fulfilled their need for speed.

Jerry was so impressed with his racing experience that he even has a bumper sticker from the school on his refrigerator at the set of Seinfeld. He talked up the school so much that about five of his writers decided to go there.

Does this mean that there will be an upcoming show with a plot involving a racing school?

Tomba LaBomba isn't going Hollywood just yet

Sex symbol skier Alberto Tomba is a big star on the slopes, but now he wants to become a big star in Hollywood.

My sources tell me he was all set to go to Hollywood a few months ago when he got into a dispute with his manager, so he canceled his trip. I guess we'll have to wait to see him on the big screen.

Alberto is scheduled to train in Vail, Colo., this November. He has a deal with Vail Associates (the folks who own the ski resort).

Hey, Alberto. The heck with Hollywood. You should go to Aspen and you can meet all kinds of movie types -- maybe you could exchange a ski lesson for a screen test.

And what kind of movies does Tomba want to do?

Action, of course.
