"Don’t Make Me Cry Roy" Makin’ Them Tear Up On "Dave’s World"
February 4, 1997

Sports talk show host and comedian Roy Firestone will appear on CBS’s "Dave’s World," on Friday, February 7th at 8:00 p.m. ET along with singer Pat Boone and actress Bea Arthur. Dave (Harry Anderson) plays a sports caster on the show. Mel (Bea Arthur), Dave’s new agent, books Dave on "The Roy Firestone Show ." Dave appears on the show with Pat Boone, who plays himself, and has recently released a new CD of heavy metal covers, "In A Metal Mood: No More Mr. Nice Guy."

While Dave is in the Roy Firestone green room nervously waiting for his appearance, he decides to try joke material out on the fellow guest Pat Boone. Pat proceeds to use all of Dave’s jokes on the show leaving Dave unprepared—which makes for a funny show.

Roy told me that since his appearance in the movie about sports agent "Jerry MacGuire" –his life has changed. "People are always yelling to me ‘Show me the money’ or ‘Roy don’t make me cry’ in airports, streets everywhere" said the award-winning talk show host. Roy played a talk show host who interviews Jerry’s (Tom Cruise) only client Wide Receiver Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding) in the hit movie. Since his movie debut, he said that his phone has been ringing with all kinds of job offers.

Roy is sold on Tom Cruise not only as an actor but as a person. He told me that he wanted to make sure that I knew "Tom is such a great guy-don’t ever believe any of the negative things you hear about him, and Tom is a huge sports fan." He said the funny thing about actor Cuba Gooding who played a football player in the movie is that he is not such a big fan of sports and didn’t even know who Roy was or anything about his background.

Besides being a talented interviewer, Roy is a comedian who does some great imitations of Keith Jackson and Al Michaels to name a few. Roy told me he does about 70 dates a year doing his comedy show. He has even performed with Jay Leno at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas.

Roy told me he is very excited about his upcoming "Up Close with Roy Firestone -- Primetime" on ESPN this February 7th at 7:30 p.m. ET featuring his interview with the very controversial Indiana basketball coach Bobby Knight .
